General Items
- Follow-up on any identified issues
- Educate the patient on shoulder care and exercises as needed
Preparation
- Gather necessary equipment (e.g., goniometer, reflex hammer, tuning fork)
- Ensure the examination room is well-lit and comfortable
- Explain the procedure to the patient and obtain consent
Inspection
- Observe the shoulder for symmetry and alignment
- Look for any swelling, bruising, or discoloration
- Check for atrophy or muscle wasting around the shoulder area
Palpation
- Palpate the clavicle for any deformities or tenderness
- Examine the acromioclavicular joint for tenderness or swelling
- Palpate the glenohumeral joint and surrounding soft tissues
Range of Motion Testing
- Assess active range of motion (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal and external rotation)
- Assess passive range of motion and compare with active range
- Document any limitations or pain during movement
Strength Testing
- Test shoulder flexion and extension against resistance
- Assess abduction and adduction strength
- Evaluate internal and external rotation strength
Special Tests
- Perform Neer test for impingement
- Conduct Hawkins-Kennedy test for impingement
- Assess for instability using the apprehension test
Neurological Assessment
- Check sensation in the shoulder region (dermatomes C4-C6)
- Test reflexes (biceps and triceps)
- Assess motor function of the deltoid and rotator cuff muscles
Final Assessment
- Summarize findings and discuss with the patient
- Consider further imaging or referrals if necessary
- Document the examination results thoroughly
