General Items
- Document closing date and any issues observed
Preparation
- Gather necessary supplies (covers, chemicals, etc.)
- Check weather forecast for upcoming weeks
- Schedule closing date with all household members
- Inform pool service company (if applicable)
Cleaning the Pool
- Remove all pool toys and accessories
- Skim surface for leaves and debris
- Brush pool walls and floor
- Vacuum the pool thoroughly
- Clean out the skimmer and pump baskets
Chemical Balance
- Test and balance water chemistry (pH, alkalinity, chlorine)
- Shock the pool with chlorine or appropriate shock treatment
- Add algaecide to prevent algae growth over winter
Draining and Winterizing
- Lower water level to below skimmers and return lines
- Drain pump, filter, heater, and all plumbing lines
- Blow out lines with a shop vac or air compressor
Covering the Pool

- Use water bags or weights to hold the cover in place (if needed)
