Preoperative Preparation
- Review patient history for family history of malignant hyperthermia (MH).
- Conduct a thorough preoperative assessment.
- Ensure emergency MH kit is readily available.
- Educate surgical team about MH risks.
- Document any previous reactions to anesthetics.
Intraoperative Monitoring
- Monitor patient temperature continuously.
- Observe for signs of muscle rigidity or increased heart rate.
- Employ capnography to monitor CO2 levels.
- Check for acidosis or metabolic changes.
- Have dantrolene readily available.
Emergency Response Plan
- Activate MH emergency protocol if symptoms arise.
- Administer dantrolene as per protocol.
- Cool patient using ice packs or cooling blankets.
- Notify anesthesiologist and surgical team immediately.
