General Items
- Document findings in medical record
- Consider further imaging or testing if abnormalities are found
Inspection
- Check for symmetry of hands
- Inspect skin for color changes (cyanosis, pallor, erythema)
- Look for swelling or edema
- Examine nails for abnormalities (clubbing, spooning, discoloration)
- Assess for any deformities (e.g., bunions, trigger finger)
Palpation
- Palpate joints for tenderness and warmth
- Assess range of motion in each finger and wrist
- Check for crepitus during movement
- Palpate tendons and muscles for any abnormalities
Functional Assessment
- Assess grip strength with dynamometer or manual method
- Evaluate fine motor skills (e.g., buttoning a shirt, picking up small objects)
- Test opposition of thumb to each finger
Neurological Assessment
- Test sensation (light touch, pinprick, temperature) on fingers and palms
- Assess proprioception by moving fingers and asking the patient to identify position
- Check reflexes (biceps, triceps) if indicated
Vascular Assessment
- Palpate radial and ulnar pulses
- Assess capillary refill time
- Check for signs of arterial insufficiency (coldness, pallor)
