General Items
- Practice skills on a manikin
- Review BLS guidelines and updates regularly
- Participate in BLS training courses to maintain certification
Basic Life Support Skills
- Check responsiveness of the victim
- Call for emergency help (911) or activate emergency response system
- Check for breathing (5-10 seconds)
- Begin CPR if not breathing (30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths)
- Use an AED as soon as available
- Continue CPR until help arrives or the victim shows signs of life
Chest Compressions
- Position hands correctly on the lower half of the sternum
- Compress at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute
- Compress to a depth of at least 2 inches for adults
- Allow full chest recoil between compressions
- Minimize interruptions in chest compressions
Rescue Breaths
- Ensure the airway is open (head tilt-chin lift for adults)
- Pinch the nose and make a complete seal over the mouth
- Give 2 breaths, each lasting about 1 second, ensuring the chest rises
- Continue with chest compressions after 2 breaths
Using an AED
- Turn on the AED immediately after retrieving it
- Attach pads to the bare chest as indicated on the pads
- Ensure no one is touching the victim during analysis
- Follow AED prompts and deliver shock if advised
- Resume CPR immediately after shock delivery
